Townies help Con U to RSEQ Championship

On a foggy Sunday afternoon, the Concordia Stingers faced of against the McGill Redmen, in a battle for the RSEQ Men's Rugby Championship. The coaching prowess of Nick "Oscar" Park was going up against some young TMR talent in Aaron Butler, Lucas "Styles" Hotton, and Eric Samuel.

It was a final that started off as a bit of a stalemate, with both sides putting up a strong defensive showing. This was reflected in the halftime score of 6-3 Con U. After the break things started to open up a bit, and both sides looked for any available gap. Concordia's big men started strong driving mauls down the field, but McGill always answered back with strong tackling pushing the Stingers back. An early penalty had stretched Concordia's lead, but it was McGill who were the first to cross the white paint with a fantastic conversion to follow from the sideline. As the minutes counted down the 7 point lead looked like it would see the Redmen to the end. Concordia had different ideas. A drive down the field on the last play of the game eventually allowed Concordia to get the score in front of the sticks and take the game into 20 minutes of overtime.

Both sides had given their best but the intensity didn't die down in the extra period. Concordia scored early and took the 21-16 lead, but this was a short-lived lead as McGill came straight back and put the ball down underneath the posts. Unfortunately the conversion was missed and the game went back to being even stevens. The momentum that the Redmen had from the try seemed to ebb away and the Stingers pushed to get the go ahead try and conversion. It was then down to the forwards to keep the ball for the remaining time and the Stingers took the win 28-21.

Congratulations to the Concordia University Mens Rugby Team on taking the RSEQ Championship, and well done to our boys who worked hard all season to get the Stingers to this point.

A Great Club Cuptoberfest

Last Saturday, in TMR tradition, players past and present joined together for a game held in memory of Pascal Coletti. Pascal's son Charlie kicked off the day, and the game that followed was a tough contest between exuberant youngsters and experienced veterans. Both sides had strong spells throughout the match, and the game moved up and down the field at a really good tempo. Hopefully those in attendance enjoyed the spectacle as much as those on the filed enjoying playing. When all was said and done the under 30's were defeated by the overs, as Sibber put it "Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill". A huge thank you goes to Pierre Drolet refereeing the game and keeping everyone in check.

Following the rugby it was back to the clubhouse to begin the third half festivities. Scobie Hall was transformed into llittle Bavaria with the first TMR Cuptoberfest. The BBQ was fired up and soon the Bratwurst were sizzling away on the grill. To keep everyone "hydrated" in the beautiful weather the Oktoberfest Night Märzen beer from Beau's Brewery was flowing, a great selection by Brewmaster Bobby Swail.

Thank you to everyone who attended, it is always great to see the TMR family come together for events like these. Special shout outs have to go out to those that organised and ran the day; Bobby Swail, Serge Ghattas, Michael Mooner and Matt "ZZ" Gronau. As well as Mooner's wife Sandy for the photos of the day and also to the guys that stepped up to set up the clubhouse and help prepare the food.

Coletti Cup - 27th September

The 2014 edition of the Coletti Cup will be held at 2pm at the Rec Center. Please come out in good numbers for what is always a spirited game between the under and over 30s.

Following the game we will be holding "Cuptoberfest" at the clubhouse. Its the perfect time of year to enjoy a few Oktoberfest ales from Beau's Brewery and grab a couple of sausages off the grill. We hope to see you all there.

TMR Alumni Down Under

Great to hear from one Alumni about a recent reunion with a fellow Townie in New Zealand.

Je m’appelle Chris Luoni de Nouvelle Zelande. J’ai joue au rugby pour TMR entre 1976 a 1980 avec un ami s’appelle Jacques Epelbaum.  Jacques habite a Paris and cette semaine il reste a chez nous a Nouvelle Zelande.

En anglais – we went to the All Blacks vs Australia test match last Saturday which was a terrific game and yesterday I introduced Jacques to Dave Rennie who is Head Coach of the Chiefs Super 15 team – winners of the Super 15 championship in 2 of the last 3 years. Dave is a major candidate to be the All Blacks Head Coach in the near future.

I thought our news about a TMR reunion after 37 years would interest you. I am known to people like John Dodwell and Bernie Loftus , Larry Doyle etc.

Game Report: TMR Women Reserves vs Beaconsfield - 12th July

10:30am kick off was set, on another great day for rugby. With a mix of cloud and sun and soon turned hot with the sun shining bright.

Pollice started off the game with a try and a score of 5-0 for the TOWN. Pollice on a roll this game scored another try for Tmr with a score of 10-0. Beaconsfield followed by attempting a try but town fighting hard and holding up that try. Unfortunately soon after beaconsfield scored a try with TMR still in the lead the score was 10-5. Susanna had an amazing catch off a lineout kick from the opposing team.

To start off the second half of the game Carla had an amazing run. Liz followed by having superb steals on defending lineouts. Jill was the next person to score a try for town with a score of 15-5. Arielle came through a break with the next try and pollice with a successful conversion raising the score 22-5. On the side lines during the game Alec and Goldberg proceed to tell "RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE". Pollice was the final person to score the last try of the game for town and making a successful conversion putting the score at 29-10 for TMR.

Game Report: TMR Women Reserves @ St Lambert Locks - 5th July

Kick off was at 1035 am. Another beautiful sunny day for rugby! We have been really lucking out with the amazing weather.

Fred started off the game with a fantastic run scoring the first try for town with a score 5-0. The next try was scored by Fred off a ruck and Susanna with a successful conversion putting the score at 12-0.

Jaime-lee started off the second half WITH HER FIRST TRY FIR TOWN :) and Susanna followed with a successful conversion raising the score 19-0. Fred had a stupendous run from the half way mark scoring the next try for town and Susanna with another great conversion leaving the score 26-0. Susanna made an excellent kick gaining yards for TMR. Emma followed with a long, hard run. Susanna proceeded to block a very powerful kick with her arms. Finally TMR got the final try of the day by Dom putting the final score at 31-0 for the town.

Game Report: TMR Women vs Montreal Barbs - 26th June

Another sunny day of rugby against the Montreal barbarians. Kick off started at 12:04pm.
Molly started off the game with a successful penetly kick kicking off the score 3-0 for TMR. Jill had an amazing run in TMR's zone bringing the ball closer to the barbs try line. Robin proceeded with a great run from the middle and scored a try for the TOWN. Molly followed with a successful kick putting the score 10-0 for TOWN. The barbs unfortunately came back with a try for them with a successful conversion putting the score 10-7 in favour of TMR. This didn't stop the town Audrey started off the next play with an amazing tackle followed by a fabulous run by Erica. Unfortunately the barbs caught up with another try and conversion putting the score at 10-14 for the BARBS.
In the second half the barbs made another conversion leaving the score 10-21. The town was able to hold off and hold their own but the barbs managed another try with a score now of 10-26. But the TOWN came back with a great try from Virginie and a successful conversion by Molly leaving the final score 17-26 for BARBS.

Game Report: TMR Women vs SABRFC - 14th June

On Saturday June 14th, 2014 TMRRFC women (prems) faced SABRFC (prems) for the second time this season. The day was full of sun and good rugby weather and TMR was on home pitch!

3 minutes into the game Doum scored the first try for town with a successful conversion brought to you by Molly, putting the score at 7-0 for the Town.  14 minutes into the game Erica sprained her ankle, but jumped back into the game. Unfortunately 18 minutes into the first half SAB got a successful penalty kick, but Town stays in the lead 7-3. 24 minutes into the match SAB sadly takes the lead scoring a try with an unsuccessful conversion putting the score 7-8.

The Town doesn’t let this stop them, 1 minute into the second half of the game another try is scored presented by Virginie, with the score now 12-8 for the Town. 60 minutes into the second half SAB has another try putting the score 12-13. At the 69th minute mark SAB comes back again with another try putting the score in favor of SAB 12-18. The Town puts up a great fight and doesn’t let this hinder their game. At the final minute of the game Joannie brings home another try for Town. Sadly we missed the conversion but the game ended with a score of 17-18 for SAB.

Game Report: TMR Women Prems @ Irish, Res @ Westmount - June 7th

On Saturday June 7, 2014 the TMR women hit the rugby field with the reserves and the prems playing at two different locations this day was going to test what the townie women were made of. Non the less it was a beautiful sunny day for some rugby.

The prems kicked off against the Montreal Irish in Ste- Julie at 1205pm. In the first half there were lots of calls and penalties against TMR. That didn’t stop them, we kept pushing and fighting and working as a team. For the first try of the day, Robin passed the ball out to Doum off the scrum, Doum pulled a dummy and brought in the try for Town, putting the score 5-0. Audrey unfortunately got sin binned for repeated diving while tackling. TMR won over the ruck and Susy got another try for town putting the score at 10-0 for TMR. Town managed to play most of the half in the Irish zone, but one break away happened and as a team Town help up the ball and didn’t let the Irish score. Loveline brought in the next try off a kick bringing the score 15-0. In the second half TMR brought up their energy and kept the power and fight going strong. TMR stole the Irish’s line out to start off the second half. Ani got the next try for Town putting the score at 20-0. Laurence made a big break today she made a running break and scored her first try for TMR putting the score at 25-0 and Molly having a successful conversion bringing the score up again to 27-0. That was not it for Laurence. When the Irish got the ball back in the townies zone, Laurence pumped her legs for 10 yards stopping the Irish from scoring. Doum took the ball and had an amazing run giving the townies back their edge. Saby scored the next try and Molly having another successful conversion, bringing the score 34-0. The final try before the end of the game was by Doum offloading the ball to Claudie and Claudie scoring the winning try 39-0 for the Town.

The seconds kicked off against Westmount at Westmount Park at 300pm. The reserves had amazing support because the prems came to cheer on the seconds and even though the teams had different games, everyone found a way to come support their team mates!! To start off the afternoon Dom picked and went with the ball to score the first try with a score of 5-0. Ariel passed the ball off Rachel to score another try putting the score 10-0 for TMR and Jenn having a successful conversion raising the score 12-0. The ball was in Westmount’s zone and a maul was formed, Sandra brought the ball over the try zone increasing the score 17-0. The next try was off a line out when the ball was overshot; Ariel caught the ball and ran it in to score once again for town putting the score at 22-0. The final try of the first half was brought to you by Maryeve bringing the score to 27-0. Again heading into the second half TMR was not allowing Westmount to catch up one bit. Maryeve started off with another fantastic run bringing the score 32-0. Ariel also had a super run scoring yet another try for you guessed it ;) TMR bringing the score 37-0. When Westmount kicked the ball, Fred caught it and ran the ball in raising the score 42-0 and Jill had her successful conversion giving a higher score to town 44-0. Jill picked the ball and passed it to Corinne, Corinne ran the ball and scored the next try for town bringing the score to 49-0. Christina had her first try of the game increasing the score 54-0. Cam came along with the next try helping out town and putting the score 59-0. The next try was beautifully made by Fred. She pulled a dummy and made a Westmount player fall to the ground, Fred got the break away and scored (a true sight to see) 64-0 for the Town. Marika was the next player for TMR to score a try putting the score up at 69-0. Christina brought in her second try of the game 74-0. Claire had her first try of the game raising the score for TMR 79-0. Cam was on a roll scoring another try for town 84-0. To finish up an amazing day Christina had a great run passing the ball to Cam and Cam scoring the try with a successful conversion from Dom. Ending the game with a score of 91-0 for TMR.

Game Report: TMR Women @ SABRFC - May 24th

    On Saturday May 25th, the TMR women had their second game of the season against SABRFC. It was a beautiful sunny day to play some rugby.

    The reserves team started off our day with one hell of a game! Laura Pollice made our first try of the game with the Town leading the score 5-0. Sabrina continued the streak with another try for Town now dominating SAB 10-0. TMR was phenomenal on defense winning over rucks, stopping attempted tries in our end and flawless tackles. SAB came out with a try and the score now at 10-5. Kyla came through at the end of the first half for town now the score at 15-5 for us. At the start of the second half SAB unfortunately caught up with four more tries putting the score at 15-29 for the opposing team. That didn’t stop Town in anyway shape or form, TMR kept making their tackles, rucking over, amazing scrums and line outs and they kept SAB away from the Town’s try line for the remainder of the game. Finally when there was thirty seconds left of the game Sabrina pulled through and got a superb break away and scored the last try of the game. With a final score of 20-29 for SAB, Town had an amazing game and worked so hard right to the end! BLEED BLUE AND GOLD! LETS GO TOWN 

    The prems game started off with a glorious catch from Anipier. Following that play Kathleen Keller (Q) had made a wonderful tackle which ended up knocking the ball on and giving Town a big advantage. Anais had a great tackle near TMR’s try line stopping SAB from a try. Unfortunately SAB got their first try leaving the score 0-7. TMR came back with a fight ready to win this game and not give up. Anais kicked for points putting the score 3-7, still for SAB. Another amazing play happened with Dome offloading to Claudie and taking the ball into contact. The Town set up, so Robin could make a pick and go to score the next try and bringing TMR into the lead with a score of 8-7. Moments later Q offloaded the ball to Susy and Susy brought it home for town, scoring an astonishing try and Anais with a successful conversion putting the score 13-7. Finally to end a very magnificent first half of the game Anipier scored an additional try for Town putting the town far ahead 20-7. When the second half rolled around SAB got one more try putting them at 20-14, still in the lead was TMR, but not too long after town came back with another well done play with Q offloading the ball to Karine and Dome took it into contact. From there TMR mauled the ball and Susy took the ball to score another try for town and Anais having another great conversion the score was at 27-14 for TMR. Fred was the next townie to get a try for TMR and Anais was on a roll with her kicks bringing the score up to 32-14 for Town. Unfortunatly SAB got another try putting the score at 32-19. Finally TMR rolled back around and the last bit of the game first was Dome with another try putting the score 29-19 Town. Finally Saby brought it home with an offload from Susy leaving the final score for TOWN at 44-19!

Game Report: TMR Men @ Beaconsfield - May 17th

With the promises of rain all week, the men's first and reserves teams headed out to Beaconsfield to open their regular season after being promoted to division 1. Luckily the skies stayed clear, and the boys were treated to a sunny day on the field as well as on the scoreboard.

The first game of the day were the reserves, led by captain PP Gros who was making his glorious return to the town after spending a few years in glorious Minnesota (ask him he will tell you how fun it is there). The reserves got off to a slow start despite holding possession for much of the game, Beaco managed to get on the scoreboard first crossing for 5 points. Scotty Fennell playing at 10 away from his usual spot at 15, led the troops down the field, and the boys really decided to throw the ball around out there and came up with two tries in the final 7 minutes of the half.

As the seconds continued to move down the field, PP decided to put on the burners on and ran half of the field to set up another TMR try (the cost of the run was a hamstring). The backs continued to move the ball around and expose the tired Beaconsfield team, with Brice Delisle crossing over the white paint. It then became time for the forwards to take over, led by strong running from Aaron Butler, Corey White, and Lucas Hotton, the reserves managed to score 5 second half tries, leading the way was Lucas with 3, and Fadri "Faddi" Horber with another. One the final whistle sounded, the reserves earned a 37-5 bonus point victory. It was clear to everyone who watched that the reserves will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

The second game of the day had the firsts playing against arch-rivals Beaco. The game started with the first methodically going through their structure and marching down the pitch. If not for 3 or 4 penalties taken by Beaconsfield they surely would have scored.  Taking advantage of an advantage was Pierre Constantin who managed to kick a cheeky drop-goal. As high 5s were given to Pierre the play restarted and the boys started to march again. This time they settled for 2 Paul Cote penalties. On the next restart the firsts began to drive again, and they had noticed that when they kept it in the forwards they were grinding down the Beaconsfield defence. Which eventually led to a try off the back of the scrum by 8 man Norman Baker. The first off ended with the teams again trading blows back and forth.

At the start of the next interval, open side flanker Ian Campos kept up his stellar play from last season and relentlessly pressured the Beaco 10, which eventually led to an intercept try by johnny on the spot, Pierre Constantin. Moments later, in a near repeat Etienne Bouchard showed off his sick crossfit form and managed to score his own intercept try. Beaco managed to push back in the last 15 minutes of the second half, but who really wants to read about that, the final score was 33-17 for the good guys.

After the match Beaconsfield did a great job of hosting the TMR men, providing us with free pizza and beer. Thanks for the hospitality! Later that evening the men returned to the clubhouse and had a great time celebrating a great opening weekend with the Women.

Reading about the men winning is all well and good, but there was some bad news that occurred on the field. Last year's finals MVP Ben "baby face" Belland, suffered another concussion which will sadly end his rugby career. Ben is a great guy on the field and an even better guy off it, so its awful news to hear. In lieu of flowers, Ben is hoping for some clubhouse beers when his head is fixed.

Men's practice

st outdoor practice to be held this thursday at Vanier. Be there at 6 ready to go by 6:15 to maximize use of available sunlight. Its probably going to be quite wet so plan accordingly.

There will be a mountain run this Saturday, April 12th. All are welcome.
