Another busy week at your rugby club. First off, shout out to the executive and others who are out there in the small places doing the important work and up front showing our community that we are a club that takes care of its own while also contributing beyond the club to lend our support to a wider society. Thursday evening, at the end of training, up popped TMR keeper of all knowledge, Ron Chiasson, with freezees for the players! De plus, notre entente avec la Fondation Ascension a été validée en cours de semaine, nous permettant de contribuer au bien être des athlètes de haut-niveau dans la province. Town Crier Toucline Match Reports:
Ce fut un samedi accablant, tant sur le plan météo que sur celui des matches face aux Townies ! Le groupe réserve féminin a fait le trajet vers Québec pour affronter le CRQ. Bref, c'est rare-isme de vaincre le club CRQ, à domicile, tellement ce club domine l'adversaire. Par contre, le groupe VMR a pris part au match qui a terminé en faveur de l'équipe hôte. Plus tôt en saison, VMR a dû faire forfait au premier voyage à la Capitale. C'est donc un certain progrès pour ce groupe. Essai marqué par Shannon Pine !
SL féminine contre Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue : Match divertissant malgré la chaleur suffocante à 13h30. Les femmes en blanc ont beaucoup dominé les premiers instants du match. VMR défendait sa ligne de but pour de longs moment avant de céder à deux reprises. La remise en touche VMR laissant à désirer, mènera au deuxième essaie SAB. Clairement, le manque de personnel se faisait sentir. Une belle course d'Alexia Vitti mène à un essai VMR avant que le vent tourne à nouveau en faveur de SAB. Appel au 911 et c'est Sabrina Poulin qui répond avec une course de 65 mètres, calquée d'une piste de la F1 ! Les avants se présentent ensuite avec des picks-and-go fort efficaces menant à l'essai de Steve Kalaydjian. L'équipe hôte répond avec un essai et le match se joue à l'égalité 19-19. Que font les troupes de Paul Jourde ? On concocte un jeu d'équipe parfait avec les avants qui dominent la mêlée avant de voir les arrières se distribuer le ballon, créant une brèche dans la défensive que peut exploiter Poulin pour sa troisième de la journée. Belle remontée et deuxième victoire des bleus sur le terrain de l'École Saint-Georges.
The Town men travelled West to visit Beaconsfield RFC. The hosts, who are always welcoming to fans and run a great canteen for all in attendance, would be keen to consolidate their hold on first place. Apprentice reporter completing an internship with the Town Crier, Paul Shibata's comments on the game: ''From the competitive perspective, the reserves demonstrated a greater sense of maturity. There was early intent to identify weaknesses in defense (A,B,C gaps, back three). This is higher level awareness and is a testament to their progress. Moreover, the pack markedly improved their scrummaging against a side that prides itself as strong in this area. Forces were channelled with less energy loss due to better shape. Lineouts were strong when on attack; however, on defense the group needs to self-identify specific set pieces or listen to instructions. This comes back to on field messaging and reception of same.'' Thanks for this, Paul. Your expertise with the forwards is clearly evident, but the editors would like some names in the next report!
The last game of the day was a rematch from the men's SL team's only loss of the season. Both squads are very strong but, I suspect the increased focus on defensive structures during the week made the difference as the home side gave away too many penalties at the breakdown. Side entry, not rolling, not releasing were all on display, especially in the last quarter of the game when fatigue set in for everyone on the pitch. As fans, it is always important for us to maintain hydration so that we can keep our wits about us as we critique the game... . Yours truly was on a steady diet of Old Milwaukee Light, so I was in fine form! Halftime was 3-7 to the men in red. Early into the second half, a set-play just inside the Beaco 40 meter area saw Stan Blazkowski slither through would-be tacklers to score under the posts. 10-7. After a successful penalty kick from Paul Arditti, Beaco scored a well-worked try to make it 13-14. Club President, Tom Ingerman, was roaming the sideline like some nervous father waiting outside the delivery room. Not to worry, boss-man, Beaco's indiscipline led to two Arditti penalty kicks, the second near game's end after a monumental TMR scrum. Final tally was 19-14 for an exhausted group led by head coach Marwan Raditzze.
