Town Crier May 26: Week three results, Fondation Ascension, Trivia, Minis...

Greetings everyone!

Week Three Results:

It was a tough week for our Townies during their home opener as all four teams registered defeats.  Some good rugby on display and, more importantly, a good deal of camaraderie and teamwork despite the final scores. With the traditional Rookie Night following the games, there was nothing but positive comments from the players as they celebrated through the night and into early morning...

Women Div. 2

12-37 vs Nomades

Women SL

10-41 vs Club de Rugby Québec

Men SL reserves

15-22 vs Beaconsfield

Men SL

15-29 vs Beaconsfield

Some great crowd support for the full day of rugby.  Thank you all for joining us!

Entente TMR/Fondation Ascension

Trivia Time!

Last week, Ron Chiasson asked you to name five pairs of brothers who played for TMR.  The bonus question was to name a pair of sisters.  Here are some answers from the font of all trivia TMR:

Rick and John AdamsDom and Pascal Coletti, Paul and Taki Shibata, Evan and , Ron and Mark Chiasson, John and Dick Dodwell, Hal and Howard Spungin, Chris and Greg Turcott, Chip and Reid Drury, Michael (player) and Des (Social) McNally, Rene and Pierre Derrien, Sean and Charlton Farmer, Ian and Bill MacArthur, Charles and JP Martineau, Jason and Bernie McMullen, Paul and Andrew Sabaas, Fred and Bernie Yoo... Sue and Laura Spiegel, Josee and Dany Brown, Kiera and Zoe Briscoe.

This week's Trivia Teaser:

Name 10 places the Town has been on tour.  Bonus question: can you name any of the themes?

Mini rugby jamboree

Throughout the province, there are a series of mini-rugby jamborees.  The first of these was hosted May 25 by NDG/TMR Dragons. Boss-lady Susy Binstock led the event that saw gaggles of young kids from U8 buzzing around like water flies on a calm lake to dozy teens wondering what they were doing at Royal West Academy at 10 Sunday morning.  Among the U8 players was a certain Kirk MacLeod.  Confirming the theory of apples and trees, young Kirk was generous with his play and comments to the referee about a certain knock-on that led to an opposition try.  Pictured below are proud papa and the young up-and-comer.

Finally, today would have been Pascal Coletti's 67th birthday.  Below is a classic photo of the big man.  This is a reminder of all of the sisters and brothers within our TMR family who have gone on to a better place where the wind is always at your back and we are left with nothing but precious friendships once no-side is whistled...

Merci de votre lecture, prenez-soin de vous !

Family ties run deep... credit: JC Vinnette

In this 70th anniversary year for the club, a special moment happened last weekend. 40 years after their dad (Paul) played for the blue and gold, the Shibatas brothers (Evan and Kyle) kept the love story going between their family and the Town. Kyle heard we were short players for the game in Québec because of injuries. He didn’t hesitate to drive all the way from Ottawa to Quebec to provide an inspiring performance with his brother that contributed to the 36-0 win.  Proving that TMR values run deep. #upthetown

Paul Shibata, front row, far right, from sometime in the 1980's...

TMR Trivia Time:

Here is a taste of what will be a full-blown competition during the Saturday evening event of the 70th weekend.  Club archivist, Ron Chiasson, will prepare a Kahoot trivia contest spanning the 70 years of TMR history.  Teams will vie for supremacy during the evening and claim the Town Trivia Trophy.  Final answers are up to Ron and all disputes are subject to public flogging, so be careful of any bunker reviews!  Here is the first in our weekly trivia primer:

Name five pairs of brothers who have played for TMR.  Bonus, name a pair of sisters having done the same.

Scobie Hall rénovations:

Town Crier April 28: Playing news & schedules, 70th Anniversary teaser and thanks

Let's go les filles !

70th Anniversary teaser

TMR celebrates its 70th Anniversary this Labor Day weekend, Aug 28-31.  Save the dates and stay informed via email and social media.  Saturday evening will see us gathering at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf for a celebratory cocktail party.  Guests will mingle as they share a beverage and food offerings, test their TMR knowledge in a KAHOOT! devised by club historian Ron Chiasson and recognize the newest inductees to our Builders and Players pantheon.  Opening remarks and welcome will be from Magali Harvey.  Ticket information to follow.

Thanks/Merci

In the last few weeks, I have reached out to various alumni to assist players in registering to play this season.  Registration costs, $520/$420 student, can be prohibitive for some and an outright obstacle for others.  When I reached out to you, the response that I knew would be there was confirmed.

Note: I will be back at the end of May.  My calendar has me chasing Mrs Frenchie around hiking trails and pubs in Ireland.  I will be sure to keep updated with TMR news, but can't promise to send any email until I get back to La Belle Province.

Be well,

Frenchie

70th Anniversary Friday:

Friday, Aug. 29 will be activities day.  Ideas on the table so far are a golf outing, laser tag and the possibility of a Pickleball Tournament.  The evening will feature an event reserved exclusively for the group affectionately termed the Ancients. TMR players from the '70s and early '80s will gather at Scobie Hall.  The event will take place from 4:30 pm with general club members welcome at the clubhouse after 8:30 pm.  Event and ticket details available soon.

70th Anniversary Logo:

Special thanks to Izzy Walker, a club standout for the women's teams, for designing the 70th Anniversary Logo.  Following the theme of Seventy Strong, the logo is a nod to our club's past in terms of colors and fonts while continuing the social media ''royal'' artwork of the crown which adorns players' names as they appear in our social media posts.  You will see this logo throughout the year.

Stay in touch, it's safer there!

70th Anniversary Teaser...

Two points on this front.  We will be tracking those interested in attending the 70th Anniversary events on a regular basis, but we did want to give you a head's up that some of our Kajima and Kurumi rugby brethren are already committed!  They include Horimu Seki, his brother Tatsu and sister-in-law Hiroko Seki who have also purchased tickets to Montreal.  They are added to the first, and most seasoned of Kajima/TMR tourists, Koji Shibata.  More of our Japanese friends are considering the visit, so this important group is likely to grow.

Thursday, Aug. 28 @ 7:00 pm is our Welcome Home Whisky and Wine Tasting.  Scobie Hall will feature a dual-tasting event, animated by some of our very own Townies, with wine tasting upstairs and whisky tasting on the main floor. Ticket purchase and other details to follow.

Town Crier Feb 10: Six Nations brunch news

Greetings!

There was a particularly good turnout to catch Italy sitting down the Welsh Dragon, which is looking more like a gecko, and to see England squeak through against a France side that had forgotten to bring their ball catching skills to the first half of Le Crunch.

From the lower deck of Twickenham during the Eng/Fra tilt, comes this beauty.  TMR alumni, Patrick Moose Jawich and his Brébeuf buddy Sev Arevian enjoyed the action and the England win.  Tickets are hard to come by at Twickers, but Moose's wife, Lauren Costello, worked her magic and secured these seats for the big man's birthday!

I'm heading to Vancouver to catch the Seven's action, so our next Town Crier will be a few weeks down the road!

Take good care of one another!
