70th Anniversary Fundraising Breakthrough

2025 marked Town of Mount Royal Rugby Club’s 70th anniversary. To honor this milestone, the club launched the 70th Strong Fundraising Campaign with the ambitious aim to raise $70,000 for the continued success and longevity of the club. It is our honor to announce that our final tally has exceeded our expectations, breaking the impressive $80,000 plateau! Once again, Townies have extended the club’s goals beyond expectations.

L'année 2025 a marqué le 70e anniversaire du Club de rugby Ville Mont-Royal. Pour célébrer cette étape importante, le club a lancé la campagne de financement fort à 70 ans, avec l'objectif ambitieux de récolter 70 000 $ afin d'assurer la pérennité et le succès du club. C'est avec fierté que nous annonçons que le montant final a dépassé nos attentes, franchissant la barre impressionnante des 80 000 $ ! Une fois de plus, les Townies ont permis au club d'atteindre des objectifs bien au-delà de nos espérances.

May 12 Town Crier: Games, games, games!!!

Bonjour à tous,

Mes excuses pour le délai d'un jour de réception de votre courriel hebdomadaire. Cette semaine, des résultats et les matchs à venir...

I split my Saturday between the Beaconsfield High field where the locals were hosting a five-game-season-opener.  The womxn in Blue and Gold spoiled the start of the party by showing flashes and some serious pace on two occasions that lead to tries. This was a huge boost to the program with new faces being welcomed by senior members of the Town. Frenchie's highlight was Shannon Pine's try (pictured below). Un gros merci à Pénélope Pinot pour les photos  !

I then headed out to Vanier to catch the men's Super League match.  Without any pre-season competitions and Saturday being their first run on the home pitch, I thought there was surely some rust, but keeping everything in perspective (which some of the fans declined to do), did a solid job of containing the mundane creativity of the Quebec men.  Strong enough in the pack complemented by a few moments of individual brilliance suggested just what this group could be capable of producing.  Frenchie's highlight was Stan Blazkowski making defenders look just silly. A try of Stan's is our last photo. Thanks Steven Spedding for the pics and the color commentary during the game.

70th Fundraising Update:

Dear Townies,

 As April 2026 comes to a close, so too does our Seventy Strong Fundraising Campaign. Before anything else, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to every member of our alumni and player family. Your generosity—shown again and again throughout this past year—has been nothing short of remarkable.

 Our 70th anniversary year was, by any measure, a tremendous success. It brought together long‑time supporters, returning faces, and new friends who have all become part of what we proudly call our rugby family. The spirit, pride, and camaraderie that define TMR Rugby were on full display, and it was a privilege to witness.

 When I first approached Tom and Pierre with the idea for this campaign, I wasn’t entirely sure how far we could go. What I received in return was unwavering encouragement—and what you delivered was overwhelming support. We set an ambitious target: raise $70,000 for our 70th. And together, we built a year filled with meaningful fundraising moments, including:

• Our raffles, generously supported by Aedelhard with fantastic prizes

• The fundraising activities during the 70th anniversary weekend

• Our Clubhouse Talks series, featuring outstanding speakers and dedicated hosts

• And, of course, these lovingly crafted emails—aimed squarely at your hearts and only gently at your wallets

 Although yesterday marked the official end of the campaign, it is never too late to support the club. Our Alumni Director is always happy to welcome new social dues members, and if you still wish to contribute, reach out to me directly—I may still be able to arrange a tax receipt for the summer.

 All that said, I am incredibly proud to share the final result of this year‑long effort. Together, we didn’t just meet our goal—we surpassed it. 

Our final tally stands at $80,000.

 This achievement is extraordinary. These funds will directly strengthen our current player base, elevate the standing of our club, and help us continue growing the game we love. Every donor, every participant, every supporter played a part in making a real and lasting difference. As a Club Trustee, I will ensure that every dollar is used exactly as promised.

 It is a great day for TMR Rugby, and I wanted each of you to feel the pride that comes from what we accomplished together.

  Notre 70e anniversaire a été, à tous points de vue, un immense succès. Il a rassemblé des visages familiers, des amis de longue date, ainsi que de nouveaux venus qui font désormais pleinement partie de ce que nous appelons fièrement notre famille rugby. L’esprit, la fierté et la camaraderie qui définissent  TMR Rugby étaient au rendez-vous, et ce fut un privilège d’en être témoin.

 Bien que la journée d’hier ait marqué la fin officielle de la campagne, il n’est jamais trop tard pour soutenir le club. Notre directeur des anciens est toujours heureux d’accueillir de nouveaux membres sociaux, et si vous souhaitez encore contribuer, contactez‑moi directement — je pourrai peut-être encore vous obtenir un reçu d’impôt pour l’été.

 Tout cela étant dit, je suis extrêmement fier de partager le résultat final de cette année d’efforts. Ensemble, nous n’avons pas seulement atteint notre objectif — nous l’avons dépassé.

Notre total final s’élève à 80 000 $.

 C’est une grande journée pour TMR Rugby, et je voulais que chacun d’entre vous ressente la fierté de ce que nous avons accompli ensemble.

C'est avec un grand plaisir que le club de rugby VMR/TMR annonce une entente de commandite avec Ambiance Construction.  Après plusieurs échanges avec Marie-Josée Castonguay, vice-présidente construction et RH, un partenariat d'une année est signé visant le soutien de nos athlètes lors des préparatifs d'avant match.  Nos partisans sauront reconnaître cette entente durant les matchs du championnat par la visibilité au verso des chandails d'échauffements.  De plus, un match de division masculin et de division féminine sera désigné le Match Ambiance de la semaine.  L'athlète du match sera photographié en mode Ambiance Construction !

April 20 Town Crier: Final week to register, Vanier playing honors, Clubhouse update

Yes, there is more to Montreal sports than the Habs in round one of the playoffs (though don't bother calling me during games!), your loyal rugby club is making its way through to the end of pre-season and heading into the first games.  A strong number of players are registered at this time and we are looking to bolster our number of social members for the 2026 season.  So, this is it, your last week to join the crew and be a contributing, informed factor at TMR.

Social Membership Drive Week Five:

Nous voici à la fin avril et la campagne de recrutement des membres sociaux est dans sa cinquième semaine.  Afin de vous informer de façon convenable, je me permets de vous présenter ces quelques points d'informations :

Congrats to Payton Authier and Justin Khairy, both Townies'  for their nominations to Vanier College's Athlete of the Year.                   

Clubhouse Update:

Comme vous le savez, notre précieux Clubhouse, moins connu sous le nom de Scobie Hall, est en train de subir une cure choc à son infrastructure.  Le gros des travaux de démolition et de planification sont derrière nous, mais nous avons les détails de finition à accomplir dans, ce que nous espérons, seront les plus brefs délais possible.  Votre comité à la direction du club est sensible au fait que cet édifice, notre chez nous, est littéralement la pierre angulaire de notre cohésion sportif et sociale.  Quel autre club à Montréal, au Québec, a la possibilité d'exploiter un tel lieu afin de célébrer, de planifier, et même se remettre de nos matchs, victorieux ou non ?  Aucun.  Rugby VMR est le seul ayant ce bénéfice essentiel à souder nos équipes et former nos joueurs et joueuses. Unis, tous armés de patience et d'une volonté participative, sauront répondre aux demandes d'aide dans les semaines à venir.

Any one of you having dealt with renovation projects will have most certainly lived with the deception of delays and setbacks. Though in a quiet moment you reminded yourself that you struggled through inconveniences for a better future.  That is what we are doing now.  Working for the future of our community, the next crop of players gathering for team breakfast, that next generation that will rep the jersey and gather at Scobie to share stories both true and full of fancy.  There will be calls going out for help in the next few weeks; that will be your chance to lean in and move this project forward to its completion.

Our next clubhouse talks series event has now been set. This one will be 100% remote given that Scobie Hall is currently still under renovations. This next event will be held on Friday, April 17th at 7:00pm and can be attended via this link. The event will feature the new TMR Rugby Director of Rugby Hugo Montemeral being interviewed by none other than the new TMR Rugby President, Pierre-Olivier Phan-Lachapelle. Hugo will discuss his philosophy and the direction that he hopes to take the club and Pierre Olivier will dig to uncover the man behind the whistle. There will be a Q&A period at the end as well and we’ll record the session for those that can’t be there at that time.

March 30 Town Crier: Clubhouse and membership updates

People of the Town!

If it's Monday, it must be Town Crier day.  Well, thanks to everyone who wondered aloud, or quietly, about my mental stability given the gloom of my intro last week.  Not to worry, this too has passed.  Feeling spring in my step and pep in my prep!  J'ai passé quelques jours au chalet où les signaux d'un printemps étaient immanquables !  Les bourgeons, des dindes sauvages, et mon sous-sol inondé en raison de la fonte des neiges en montagnes !  L'été est à nos portes.  De plus, nos équipes se préparent pour les entraînements extérieurs ce qui voudrait signaler les préparatifs pour nos premiers matchs le 9 mai.  Ci-dessous, deux mise-à-jour importantes...

Clubhouse update:

Some of the final touches to the house as we prepare to get the new floor in place. The objective is to expose and highlight as much of the stonework as possible while still being able to establish the new bar, kitchen and washroom areas. Thanks to Caroline Woolrich, Hengle Zao, Lucas Hotton, Ben Laurin and Patrick Chikhani for their help last Saturday.

2026 Social Membership Drive:

Week three update sees four new members joining the squad!!! Their names appear in bold at the start of the list below. We fell short of our goal of ten new members to join them by March 29.  I'm challenging those of us who are 2026 members to recruit one more person to join by April 4. Shout out to Dee Hamilton and Mike Badke who both contributed again even though their social membership was covered by their earlier generosity.  Anyone wanting to follow their lead is welcome. A reminder of what the costs are to players:  Senior registration is: $588.31 // Student registration is:   $464.22   ($285 // $170 are club fees which help pay for fields, physio, coaching and kit replacement, )

March 23 Town Crier: 2026 Coaching Staff and Social Membership Drive week Two

Greetings Townies,

March clings to the city in the form of a winter storm, yet the rugby world soldiers on.  Here are a couple of updates for your reading pleasure...

2026 Coaching Staff:

Below are the individuals who make up the 2026 TMR Coaching Staff.  While there are those responsible for leading each section, the coaching philosophy is one where each coach, be they a position or skill or tactical specialists, will not be tied to one particular group or team.  There will be a rotation among the women, men and junior squads.  The idea is that by sharing the knowledge, players may come to be more complete athletes having had the benefit of multiple points of view from various personnel.  Moreover, by sharing the workload, one of the objectives is to keep staff with the club for longer avoiding any burnout.  Some may think this list is crowded.  A too many cooks scenario; however, having been to a typical Tuesday session where well over 80 players are on the field, I would suggest that we look at this list as a boon of good fortune that surrounds the club.  Coaches want to forge and chase success with the Town. Here are those who commit to doing so this year:

Week two update sees six new members, pushing us over the 35-mark!!! Their names appear in bold at the end of the list below. Let's get ten people to join them by March 29. Shout out to Donna-Lynn Ahee and Karen Runnels who both contributed again even though their social membership was covered by their 2025 actions.  Anyone wanting to follow their lead is welcome. Town Crier March 16...Clubhouse, training update and 2026 Social Membership Drive, Training & Clubhouse Updates

Greetings everyone,

It is my hope that this note finds you in good spirits, fortunes and fates heading towards spring, with smiles on faces and a rekindled interest in your favorite rugby club!  I have to confess that, having been to two indoor training sessions, I'm looking forward to strong competition within the teams as each group, including our new men's third team, has 20+ players at these gym sessions.  So, it is with exemplary interest in the club, that I present these points for this week:

2026 Social Membership Drive March 15 - May 1:

Our target is 125 Social Members this year.  This target is realistic given the inclusion of those socialites who last year provided financial assistance to over 17 club members dealing with financial constraints in meeting registration. As you may recall, your $100 membership helps to cover the costs of field rental and providing coaches with a base stipend for their time and investment.  Moreover, your membership allows you to keep updated via this phenomenal Town Crier, you also have the benefit of renting our renovated Clubhouse at a preferred rate, you are welcome to pay membership prices for refreshments and have speaking and voting rights at our A.G.M.  FYI, here is a breakdown of playing registration costs for this year are:

The club has initiated an early-bird discount and a monthly plan to further assist players in registering. New this year, $10 of each social membership will go to help players in need meet their dues commitments. 50% of any amount over the $100 fee structure will go towards this initiative.  Given  our healthy student-player population, it is essential for us to help any player with financial difficulties to ensure they can play rugby. With the help of VP's Juliette Lachapelle    and J-C Vinette, an application process is in place and those who qualify will agree to meet the  stipulated conditions in receiving their portion of any club subsidy through the Social Membership Support Fund.

Après deux entraînements aux gymnases Brébeuf, les joueurs/joueuses ont bien pris le rythme des sessions.  Bien sûr que tout le monde à hâte de renouer avec les pelouses,  ce qui rendrait les exercices de contacts plus agréables que de les faire sur des tapis au sol !  Voir nos pages Facebook (TMRRugby) et Instagram (TMRRUGBY) afin de visualiser les vidéos de la semaine, mais voici quelques photos :

Clubhouse Update:

Once this coming week is done, the new white oak flooring should be in place and we will be working on the divisions of the newly configured bar, kitchen and washroom.  Masterful German Mike Bourdeau and his crew are set to attack the flooring once it is delivered.  After that Clubhouse Manager Patrick Chikhani and his minions will be completing the remaining 1001 details in getting Scobie's fresh face ready for public consumption!  When a call for help with work goes out, don't be shy and respond ''With you!''

70th Strong Fundraising continues...

As many of you are aware, our Seventy Strong Fundraising Campaign ends shortly on April 30th, 2026. There are two activities that I would like to tell you about. First, the third in our series of clubhouse talks. The first was on coaching with Jocelyn Barrieault hosted by Lucas Hotton, the second was on refereeing with Chris Asmus and Emma Gallagher hosted by Pierre Drolet and the third will focus on players, with TMR affiliated National level players speaking about their playing experiences hosted by Susy Bienstock. We will confirm the date and location shortly.

The second activity is a fundraiser aimed at helping us hit our lofty $70,000 target (we’re about $16K short of that as of Dec 31st). Anyone (including those who donated previously) who donates at least $70 to the Seventy Strong Campaign (which includes a tax receipt) from now until the end of February will receive a TMR Rugby swag kit including [for men: a tie, pocket square and a pair of dress socks] or [for women a scarf, hair scrunchie and dress socks (same socks as in the men’s picture)] . Note that the designs included here are not final, (AI generated) but give you a good idea of what they will likely look like.

Here’s what to do if you are interested.

1. Make your tax deductible donation to the club by clicking on this Sports Québec website link and filling in the form.

2. Send an email to 70thfundraising@tmrrugby.com and let me know if you are interested in a men’s or women’s kit.

We’ll be placing the order at the end of February and we expect the goods for the start of the season. (roughly)  Also please remember that we still have room on our commemorative Seventy Strong plaque which will be going up on the clubhouse wall. Any donation above $5,000 gets your name on this plaque.

We’re close to our goal. Help us achieve it through your much-appreciated donation.

After a terrifically productive demolition day at Scobie Hall, it was time to turn our attention to the 2025 Captains' Dinner held on January 18.

Recruiting abroad...

The club is actively recruiting players from abroad.  This to add to the local and student-based player roster.  Men's head coach, Marwarn Erraidi, has been in contact with a promising Irish player.  I am reaching out to the alumni community in hopes of finding part-time employment for such players.  This one prospect would arrive in May and be in Montreal until August.  Please let me know if you have any leads to assist us in drawing in such players.

Hey there everyone,

I am hopeful this note finds you well and that you are making your way through the start of the year with purpose, if not calm.  Two points for you: Clubhouse renovation and the 2025 Captains' Dinner.

Rénovations au Clubhouse:

Les 12 travaux d'Astérix se poursuivent au 3380 Chemin Côte-de-Liesse !  Après les tâches légères de rangement et de ménage, samedi dernier est le moment de l'apparition du Dirty Dozen.  Douze hommes, plus ou moins fort, ayant pour tâche de finir avec les préparatifs au remplacement du plancher en place depuis l'atterrissage de l'homme sur la lune!  Quelques photos du groupe en action, notons la présence d'un certain président du club, un américain en cavale de son chez-soi, le capitaine de la formation Élite masculin, un entraîneur-chef ayant eu libération conditionnelle pour un samedi hors-saison et plusieurs d'autre ayant contribué aux succès des travaux.

Nov 17 Le Town Crier: Men's University Championship edition

Greetings brethren of the Town,

Snow now covers much of the green, but where there's a will (and some shovels), there's a way!  Shout out to the coaches, players, fans and training staff of both Université de Montréal and École de technologie supérieure for their contribution to the 2025 Men's university rugby championships.  Defending champion ÉTS has not only made it to the final again this year, but the group are hosts to this year's action.  UdM have secured a place in the consolation final, no small achievement given that this is the school's first appearance in the tourney. As editor of the Crier and close follower of everything TMR, I cannot overstate the importance of the success of these two university programs. First they are clearly challenging the bias that Canadian rugby is west-centric.  Second, the Town provides many of the players and coaches inclusion in a top-flight club that is focused on improving its rugby baseline every day.

Fall Seven's News:

The last of the Fall Seven's competitions took place last weekend.  It's a great way to extend the season for those players who no longer play university rugby into November.  Our men's and womxn's squads took top-honors, securing yet more hardware for Scobie Hall.  Below is a pic of the womxn's squad...

L'ors d'une finale digne de son prestige les Pirates d'ÉTS ont surmonté les Carabins, ces derniers ayant battu McGill en demi-finale,   The number of Townies on the pitch and in the coaching staffs during this final is both proof of our strong connection to these programs and to the stability offered by our club as strong competition for these athletes while school is not in session. 

Men's Nationals:

The annual men's university tournament known as Nationals will take place in Montreal.  Le tout est organisé par ÉTS, champion en titre du tournoi 2024.  Les matchs sont toujours enlevants et l'atmosphère est au rendez-vous.  Les matchs auront lieu au Centre Claude Robillard, et pour tous les informations suivez ce lien;

Movember is men's health month:

Not something I usually do, but I thought to reach out with this initiative.  I'm not much of a stash-guy, but will give it a go!  Movember is an ideal opportunity to shine a light on men’s health. I’m at the point where health is a priority, and that hasn’t always been the case.  Ensemble encourageons les hommes de discuter de leur santé, que ce soit physique ou mentale.  Si vous êtes en mesure d'aider, je vous en serais très reconnaissant...  To donate to my page:

Le Town crier: October edition

Greetings Townies!

A few weeks have passed since my last missive, but the Town Crier is back to its monthly posts to you, our faithful followers.  A few notes of interest during this never-ending summer in Montreal:

Une rencontre avec Jocelyn Barrieau..

Le mercredi 29 octobre à 19 h 30, nous aurons le plaisir d'accueillir Jocelyn Barrieau, entraîneuse en chef de l'équipe féminine canadienne de rugby à sept, qui s'entretiendra (à distance depuis Vancouver) avec Lucas Hotton, l'animateur légendaire de TMR, dans le cadre d'une entrevue exclusive. Découvrez le parcours de Jocelyn dans le rugby à travers le club de rugby VMR, ce que le club signifie pour elle et son opinion sur la situation du rugby au Canada. Nous aurons également des invités spéciaux ET une session de questions-réponses qui permettra à tous d'avoir un aperçu du plus haut niveau du rugby dans le monde. Ne manquez pas cet événement fantastique. Notez dès maintenant la date dans vos agendas. [lien pour connecter] Le club-house sera ouvert à partir de 19h pour une soirée conviviale et nous diffuserons l'événement en direct sur grand écran.

Complicité entre le club VMR et la Fondation Ascension...

En vertu d'une entente entre l'exécutif du club et celui de la Fondation Ascension,  entente prévoyant une somme de 7$ par essai marqué des équipes durant la campagne 2025 (jusqu'à une limite de 700$), notre club et la Fondation ont présenté un montant de 700.00$ en terme de commandite direct à Sabrina Poulin.  Depuis Sab : Un gros merci au club, c'est ultra apprécié!!! The TMR family welcomes an addition...

Congratulations to Kayla and Norman Baker on the arrival of Finlay Jan Andrew!  Everyone is doing well and looking forward to their new adventures!

All for now, everyone.  I'll be on the touchline for a while recovering from knee replacement surgery.
